SpaceX is a private US aerospace manufacturer and space transportation service company that was founded by Elon Musk in 2002, although the headquarters of SpaceX is in Hawthorne, California, there are other branches as well to help with its facilitation.
At the point of creation the objective of SpaceX was to serve as a reduction in space transportation costs which will help in the colonization of Mars. The intriguing thing about SpaceX is that it has been able to change the way we think about space, it has been able to bring before us a whole new understanding of it. SpaceX has been said to be the first privately owned company to ever successfully launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft and that is just one among its various achievements which will be acknowledge later on.
You should know that SpaceX is actively pursuing several different research and development programs which are notable, it has made the intent of developing reusable launch vehicles, an interplanetary transport system and alongside it a global telecommunication network. The intention of developing a reusable launcher program was made public in 2011 and the design was completed in February. SpaceX has been able to revolutionize what we understand about space travel and this has been made possible by one man “Elon Musk”, the reason behind this is because he profounded the idea of SpaceX and eventually that idea was put into action and as time progressed it has been able to be of great benefit. If you don’t know much about Elon Musk you’ll be able to know more about him and understand just how well his company has been of great benefit to space travels.
Elon Musk is a technology entrepreneur, investor, and engineer, although being the founder of SpaceX he is also associated with other big companies like Tesla, Paypal and many others. As at 2016 he was ranked on the “Forbes” list of “The World’s Most Powerful People”. The main objective here is to know more on how he came about SpaceX and what are his future intentions surrounding it.
As at 2001, Elon Musk had an idea on a project which would be to land a miniature experimental greenhouse with the intentions of growing plants on Mars, with an attempt to regain public interest in space exploration and as well lead to an increment in NASA’s budget. He tried purchasing a cheap rocket in Russia but was unable to get one so he returned back home empty-handed. Now here’s where things get interesting, on his flight back home, Elon Musk realized that he could as well start a company which would focus on building the rockets he needed, which will then lead to his creation of SpaceX.
During the early period of 2002, after putting the idea he thought of into action and built a company on it, Elon Musk started seeking out for staffs he could work with for his new company, which was soon to be given the name SpaceX. Tom Mueller was approached by Elon Musk and he agreed to work for him and just like that SpaceX came into existence. What you should have in mind is that at the start of SpaceX it was first headquartered in a warehouse in El Segundo, California. A lot of time has passed since then and the company has shown immense growth since it was first founded, it has had a major increase in its welfare and employees, this has been able to show just how much SpaceX has grown rapidly and it doesn’t look like it’ll be slowing down either. SpaceX has brought before the world various rockets, which can also be included as some of the achievement it has attained and you will be getting to know about them.
FALCON 1 ROCKET
In regards to the Falcon 1 it was an expendable launch system which was developed and manufactured by SpaceX which you already know by now to be a private owned company and all of this took place around the period of 2006-2009. Moving forward into the future a bit on the 28 September 2008, Falcon 1 was announced to have become the first privately developed liquid-fuel launch vehicle to make it’s way to orbit.
Falcon 1 has a record of being launched 5 times and it eventually succeeded in achieving orbit on its fourth attempt which was in September 2008 alongside a mass stimulator as a payload. Falcon 1 eventually made its last flight on 14 July 2008 and with success if delivered the Malaysia RazakSAT satellite to orbit with it being SpaceX’s first ever commercial launch. After all of these became possible Falcon has been put to rest and that led to the birth of Falcon 9.
FALCON 9 ROCKET
The Falcon 9 is known to have succeeded the Falcon 1 so you can already guess by now that it’s more advanced and improved. Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket which was also designed and manufactured by SpaceX for a more reliable and safer transport of satellites and the Dragon spacecraft into orbit. Although succeeding Falcon 1, Falcon 9 has been able to hold the record of being the first orbital class rocket that is capable of reflight. During the time that has passed, SpaceX has been able to recognize that rocket reusability is the key which is needed for the breakthrough to reduce the cost of access to space and as a result lead to people being able to live on other planets.
When it comes to the design of Falcon 9 is was designed from the ground up so that it will bring about maximum reliability. To be included the Falcon 9’s simple two-stage configuration has been able to minimize the number of separate events and with an addition of the nine first-stage engines, Falcon 9 has been recognized as being safe when it comes to completing its mission even in a situation when an engine shutdown. As at 2012 Falcon 9 made history when it delivered Dragon (which will talk about briefly later on) into orbit correctly and since that lanch Falcon 9 has made an impressive amount of trips to space, which include delivering satellites to orbit as well as delivering and returning cargo from the space station for NASA.
DRAGON SPACECRAFT We’ve talked about Falcon 1 and that led to Falcon 9, now let’s take a stroll to the “Dragon Spacecraft”. Dragon has been said to be a free-flying spacecraft designed to deliver cargos and people to orbiting destinations, now what you should have in mind is that Dragon spacecraft was initially meant to transport only humans but as the case may be it turned to be capable of delivering cargos as well so it was adopted for the usage and that led to it being the only spacecraft currently flying which is capabale of returning significant amount of cargo to Earth.
With specific measures being taken the Dragon spacecraft has been made capable of carrying up to 7 persons on board it along various environmentally sensitive cargo to and from the Earth orbit without any casualties. All of these has been able to bring about a revolutionalization in the understanding of space and how well it can be utilized effectively.
CONCLUSION As you already know at the initial start of SpaceX, Elon Musk stated that he wanted to reduce the cost and improve the reliability of access to space and since then he has made various success with SpaceX and one of those success is that SpaceX has been able to develop a rapidly reusable launch system. We can already say that SpaceX has done a lot in the exploration of space and will continuely to strive for more.
